ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TOOLKITS

Innovative Learning Services and Student Support Services have initiated a joint research project into Assistive Technology Toolkits. These toolkits consist of the technologies listed below, and reside with Specialists from Educational Support Services (ESS). ESS Specialists address complex issues and problems in a thoughtful, systematic way, drawing upon personal knowledge and experience and other resources as needed. Having access to an organized collection of assistive technology software and handheld devices that support student access to the curriculum provide opportunities for Specialists to assess the benefits of these resources with students.

Assistive Technology Toolkits arecomprised of a variety of assistive tools that have the potential to enable Specialists to evaluate, recommend and select devices and supports that increase student access to the curriculum. According to Edyburn (2000), these kits would serve to “quickly deploy tools of obvious value into the hands of teachers and students and provide readily accessible opportunities for exploration".
