Inclusive Learning Technologies Initiative
The Inclusive Learning Technologies Initiative focuses on a 21st Century response to support the learning needs of all Calgary Board of Education (CBE) learners by exploring new and emerging technologies, as well as providing accessibility and support for students with unique learning needs. A major aspect of this 3 year initiative is conducting research into the effects of infusing technology into the pedagogical considerations within Special Education settings.
In Year One of this initiative, two Special Education Programs addressing the complexity and diversity of CBE students have been selected. Approximately 30 schools with a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) or a Bridges, New Directions, Nexus or STOP Program have been identified as potential sites for this initiative.
Major Outcomes of the initiative include:
- Meeting with School Principals and teachers of the Special Education Programs to gather information on existing tools and resources currently being used in the program
- Exploring the potential of new and emerging technologies to accommodate the unique learning needs of students in the program
- Identifying ongoing support required for educators to access and successfully implement technologies that support the diverse learning needs of students
- Conducting action research which explores the impact that new and emerging technologies has on student learning and engagement and on the practice of teachers who are engaged in designing learning experiences using new and existing technologies in their daily teaching practice.
