CBE Web Filter
The new content filtering software
There is a new external filter that is being introduced into the CBE. This filter system will fix a number of the problems that have been identified with the old system. More information can be found here.
For information on this new filter and how this might impact your school please click on the appropriate filter level link below. If you are unsure of what filter level your school is at click here.
- Filter level 1 (some elementary schools)
- Filter level 2 (most elementary, junior and middle schools)
- Filter level 3 (most high schools)
- Fitler level 4 (Comming soon to a school near you)
Key features of the new content filter are
- Staff are filtered at a different level than students. The only sites that are blocked are those contained within the Admin Regulation 1062.
- The filtering system "knows" that you are a teacher through active directory which works great on a PC but not on a Mac. If you using a Mac go to http://staffcf.cbe.ab.ca.
- This will allow you to override the system as long as the Browser that you are using is open
- If you are inactive for 15 minutes the system will log you off and you'll have to log on again.
If you want a website's category changed
-
Sites are categorised by the filtering company that we are using (Bluecoat). You can tell what a site has been categorized by going to http://sitereview.bluecoat.com/sitereview.jsp. If you think that they have been miscategorised you can suggest that the categorization be changed. You will be prompted to change the categorisation. Make sure that you ask for an email response. The filtering service that we use is Blue Coat ProxySG. To help you with the process a screenshot is supplied below.

2. If the Categorization is correct you can ask for the site to be “whitelisted” which means that everyone at your filter level can access that site. Contact the HelpDesk.
