Digital Citizenship Process

Principals and Key Contacts

There has been a change at ITS. Keith Howie contract ends on October 21st and Roger Proulx will be our key contact for this project until it is complete.

Please note that there is a delay in the activation of schools. Almost all of the hardware has been added to the schools for this project. There is a delay in the activation. ITS can only activated 2 sites per day. There are over 200 hundred sites left to activate. If you want to know where you are on the list then please email Roger Proulx (RJProulx@cbe.ab.ca).

Capacity Completed

Everything at the school finished. Schools must finish the rest of the steps on this page before the secondary system can be activated.

Functionality Eligible

Paper work is in. ITS still might have a few tweaks before activating the LAWN.

This will allow students' devices to connect to the wireless network. You will receive an email from Information Technology Services confirming completion of the work. If you are unsure please contact the CBE Helpdesk (helpdesk@cbe.ab.ca).

Step 2

Delegate

Principals may identify a school designate – this may be a staff member or a team - to coordinate the school’s re-affirmation process for their digital citizenship plan. It would be beneficial for at least one person on the team to have some D2L experience.

The school designate will be the primary contact person/group for Innovation and Learning Technology and will both provide and receive information and resources needed to support moving this work forward in the building.

To get support, ask questions or clarify aspects of the reaffirmation process, please contact Sue Bell – Education Specialist: Teaching and Learning at smbell@cbe.ab.ca.

Step 3

Plan

Complete your school's digital citizenship plan.

Step 4

Module

Have teachers complete a digital citizenship module that may be administered face-to-face with staff or accessed by staff online through D2L. The D2L module contains resources for both a face-to-face digital citizenship workshop and an online module. Because some of the content is licensed from the Media Awareness Network, it is only available within the password-protected D2L environment. Please contact a CLT Specialist for access to the resources.

Step 5

Letters

Send a letter to parents/guardians regarding issues relating to the school's digital citizenship plan, the CBE's acceptable use policy, filtering procedures and student use of the wireless network.

If you are unsure of your school's filter level please refer to the list of filter levels of CBE Schools.

Step 6

Checklist

Complete the linked checklist and email it to your Area Director. Your Director will contact Roger Proulx (RJProulx@cbe.ab.ca) at Information Technology Services that your school is compliant with student wireless use requirements. ITS will activate the network for students and notify the school's principal that this has occurred.

Step 7

Inform

Inform students and parents that students may bring in their wireless devices and connect to the CBE Learner Accessible Wireless Network (LAWN).

Once Activated

The LAWN verifies accounts using active directory. Once the LAWN is activated students can not be prevented from using it on a individual bases.
