Learning Resources Strategy
Project Overview
The Calgary Board of Education requires a broadly based strategy for learning resources to understand and plan for the school and organization of the future. This strategy will be created and exist in a very dynamic environment. It will need to align with a new learning model for the 21st Century, which aims to bring personalized learning resources to all students through flexible delivery options, including digital, print, and human forms. As a whole, the Learning Resources Strategy proposes large‐scale organizational change. First steps have been identified to launch the LRS. Success in these projects will greatly contribute to next steps.
Short Term LRS Projects – First steps in the process:
IMS Upgrade Project – Implementation of a new Integrated Media System (Library Management System) district‐wide. This Project is studying ways to contend with the February 2010 expiry of our current IMS (Accent) support contract. Evaluation and Selection of Learning Resources Project – creation of a new model for the CBE. This would involve work with Educational Resources and Services (ERS) and Evaluation and Selection to put new procedures into place. Investigating potential partnerships (locally, provincially, inter‐provincially) is key to this work. Read more >

Acquisition of Digital Resources Project – Identification and acquisition of digital content for use by staff and students (i.e. a sustainable model for hosting e‐books and audio books, selecting streaming video content providers, etc.). This involves work with publishers, vendors, and outside partners. This also involves examination of district‐wide licenses for digital products. This project is closely related to the Evaluation and Selection of Resources Project, and the findings of each will inform the other. Connected to the Acquisition of Digital Resources project is the Meta‐tagging and cataloguing of a larger scope of Learning Resources Project ‐ as well as integration with the new IMS system and the Learning Object Repository (LOR) in D2L. Digital Citizenship: Enabling Personalization Through Handheld Mobile Learning ‐ use of the nine facets of Digital Citizenship to inform and guide the use of a variety of digital devices, both student owned and school deployed. This may include cell phones, iPod Touch, video conferencing, laptops, etc. Read more >
