Implementation of Quality Programming
There are several components involved in the implementation of a new program. Below is a brief summary with some links and information to assist schools.
Quality Programming
Administrator's Guide to Second Language Implementation Tool Kit is an invaluable tool in the implementation of a second language program. The various chapters address different issues:
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: Planning the Implementation of a Language Program
Chapter 3: Organizing for Instruction in a Language Program
Chapter 4: Implementing the Language Program
Chapter 5: Using Technology to Support a Language Program
Chapter 6: Monitoring a Language Program
Chapter 7: Assessing the Success of the Language Program
Chapter 8: Adjusting the Implementation Plan
Additionally, Canadian Parents for French (CPF) has developed a School Self-Assessment Tool that is useful in the implementation of an FSL program.
The Guide to Education recommends 95 hours (10% of programming). The initiative, as mandated by the CBE, is for 75 instructional hours (in order to better fit with options timetabling) and 20 hours of cultural experience (Carnaval, Cabane à sucre, Chinese New Year celebrations, Flamenco dancing, Dia de los Muertos & Dia del nino celebrations, German Day at U of C, St. Martin’s Day celebration)
Staffing
Human resources has acquired language proficiency exams which will be conducted with all new hires. Additionally, any teacher who would like their proficiency level assessed can request to do so. The assessed proficiency level will support administrators in making hiring decisions as well as shape professional development opportunities for teachers.
CLT consultants are also available to help principals with providing feedback and support.
Special Needs and ESL
The CBE supports and promotes an inclusive learning environment. In the case of coded or ESL students, each one should be considered on a case by case basis. A decision should include the parents as well as the student, if possible, and documented in the IPP (for coded students).
